Instructions

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice.

  2. Put the tomato juice, vodka, lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire, hot sauce, celery salt and pepper in a cocktail shaker or jar with a few ice cubes.

  3. Roll the drink rather than shaking it: pour it back and forth between the shaker and another glass 4 or 5 times. Rolling chills and mixes it without making the tomato juice foamy.

  4. Strain into the glass over the ice and garnish with the celery stalk, olives and a lemon wedge.

Tips for success

  • Check the tomato juice label. Plain tomato juice has about 4 g net carbs per half cup, while many bottled Bloody Mary mixes add sugar or corn syrup.
  • Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies; look for an anchovy-free brand if that matters to you.
  • For a brunch crowd, mix a pitcher of everything except the vodka and ice up to 3 days ahead, then pour about 4½ oz (135 ml) of mix and 1½ oz (45 ml) of vodka per glass.

Nice to have, not needed

  • A celery-salt rim adds a savory crunch — skip it and the drink is still well seasoned.
  • A celery stalk, a pickle spear or a few olives are the classic garnishes — a lemon wedge is plenty.

Storage & meal prepMeal-prep friendly

  • Keeps 3 days in the fridge
  • Doesn’t freeze well

Reheat: Stir the chilled mix, then add vodka and ice to order.

Prep tip: Make a pitcher of the mix ahead, so brunch drinks take seconds.

The mix (without vodka or ice) keeps 3 days in a covered jar in the fridge. Stir before pouring.
